Principal’s Report
What a busy and exciting term it has been so far! In the past fortnight we’ve celebrated both Science Week and Book Week – two highlights on the school calendar that bring a real buzz of energy across the classrooms and playgrounds.
Hopefully your child has come home bubbling with something they discovered during Science Week. Across both primary and secondary, students were encouraged to ask questions, investigate problems, and see themselves as scientists and innovators – exploring how what they learn in class connects with the real world.
Book Week was another wonderful celebration. The parade is always a standout, with so much colour, imagination and fun on display. “Books on Blankets” was also a beautiful way for our primary students to share reading with their families. At the same time, our secondary students were busy with their own challenge – an Adventure Around the World, a ‘Greatest Race for Readers’ that had them racing across the school, piecing together clues linked to the books they’ve read.
Moments like these remind us that reading is not just about sounding out words, it’s about connection – the conversations that happen around a story, the laughter at a funny character or the chance to imagine new worlds together. At home, simply setting aside a few minutes each day to read with your child makes a huge difference. For younger ones, that might be sharing a bedtime story. For our older students, it could be chatting about what they’re reading, recommending a book to each other, or even both reading the same novel and comparing thoughts. Reading isn’t just homework – it’s something to enjoy together.
Small moments make a big difference in helping children grow as curious learners and confident readers.
Wishing you a lovely term ahead
Lauren
The Resilience Project - Empathy
Empathy is more than just a social skill. It’s a cornerstone of emotional resilience and a key ingredient in building strong, supportive communities. Through our participation in The Resilience Project, Roleystone Community College places empathy at the heart of its mission to improve mental wellbeing through simple, evidence-based practices.
In our school, students learn to recognise emotions in themselves and others, creating a culture of kindness and understanding. At home, empathy strengthens relationships and reduces conflict.
Empathy also plays a vital role in mental health. When we feel seen and heard, we’re more likely to thrive. And when we extend that same care to others, we contribute to a ripple effect of emotional support.
Through storytelling, journaling, and mindful reflection, we can all learn to walk in someone else’s shoes and build a more compassionate world. At Roleystone, we practice GEM chats regularly and we urge you to do the same at home! Here are some easy prompts to practice empathy at home.

RCC Swimming Lessons – Term 4

Kindy-Yr 3 Assembly – Thursday 14 August
Hosted by Room 2.5, Year 1
Room 2.5 have been participating in The Resilience Project every week.
Recently we have been learning about empathy. Empathy means we think about and understand the feeling of others.
The Fill A Bucket stories help us practise our empathy. We learn that when we fill other peoples’ buckets by being kind and supportive, we fill our own bucket too.
We hope you enjoy our song and try to fill someone’s bucket today.

Year 4-6 Assembly – Thursday 21 August
Hosted by Room 5.2, Year 6
Mrs Azzam and Mrs MacAngus’s Year 6 class have been diving into the magical theme of Book Week: Book an Adventure. Inspired by the endless possibilities found between the pages of a good book, the students created a vibrant performance that celebrates the joy of storytelling and the thrill of adventure. They created their own skits and backdrops for the performance, with each skit 'jumping in' to the events of the book.

Public Speaking Competition Final
Earlier this term, Principal Lauren Findlay and Year 5/6 Teacher Anna Fletcher, accompanied two of our students to Parliament House for the Grand Final of the Primary Schools Public Speaking Competition. Kai and Leo Alestalo were among eight students from seven schools and four electorates to vie for the Championship.
The final was held in the Council Chamber of the Parliament of Western Australia – a daunting venue, but our students were very impressive, and they spoke on the topic of their ‘Dream Job of the Future’. The three judges, Dr Parwinder-Kaur MLC, Simon Dagnall and Thomas Moorhead had a very hard time deciding the winners.
But eventually they awarded:
- Gold to Kai from Roleystone Community College
- Silver to Saindhavi from North Harrisdale Primary School
- Bronze to Leo from Roleystone Community College
This is the second year in a row that one of our students has taken the first prize!
Congratulations to both Kai and Leo – they represented our school with pride and respect.
Our thanks go to Mrs Erin Burns, Acting Associate Principal, who helped guide Kai and Leo while she was here at RCC, Principal Lauren Findlay and Teacher Anna Fletcher.

Science Week 2025
A journey through the universe!
To celebrate all things science, the Science Guidance Committee created a range of learning provocations for students to explore during second lunch throughout the week. Students were given the opportunity to explore a range of topics related to this year’s Science Week theme, ‘Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature's hidden language’. These topics included fossils, Fibonacci's flowers, animal tracks, tessellations in nature, stars and constellations (Primary). For Secondary students, DNA, Seed Dispersal and Microscopes. The students had a wonderful time discovering new things, participating in hands-on activities and exploring the universe around them.
Kind regards

Kindy Astronauts Soared to New Heights!
In Kindy 1.1 Mrs Ashboth and Mrs Biggs turned the room into a spaceship! Everyone had a turn at being an astronaut for the day, and investigating and discovering new sights, sounds and lots of interesting new things.

Year 1’s in Room 2.5
The children of Room 2.5 really enjoyed spending time at the Science Fair. They moved from table to table investigating a wide range of science topics, including animal footprints, fossils and constellations.

Book Week
Book Week Parade – Kindy
Unfortunately, some very wet and stormy weather meant our parade was held back a couple of days this year, with our Kindy students holding their own parade in Block 5. They were cheered on by a huge crowd of parents, students and teachers and they all loved the experience. They all looked fantastic as well, in some wonderful costumes. After the parade, they invited their parents to their classrooms for some hands-on Book Week activities.
Book week fun in Kindy 2!
Book week was a huge hit in our classroom. Our adventure book was Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson. We loved having a sensory tray to help us re-tell the story and we had so much fun creating a “blue book” since our focus sound was “B”!

Later in the week our Pre Primary- Year 6 students enjoyed their parade in the undercover area, and as per previous years, they showed off some pretty amazing costumes! Our staff also got into the spirit of the day and there were Disney characters, good and bad galore, parading around at RCC! The wait for this parade this year, was well worth it!
Thank you to everyone who organised and ran the event this year. A big thank you to our local Community Bendigo Bank, Roleystone and Karragullen representative Deb de Boer who came along to give out prizes to our students.

Books on Blankets
Books on Blankets was a great success for 2025!
A big thank you to our families for attending this fantastic event – what a great way to finish a week of Book Week celebrations. We saw lots of families enjoying the sunshine and reading a great book together.

Great Book Swap
On Friday 22 August, we held the Great Book Swap. Our Primary students thoroughly enjoyed coming into Block 5 and choosing a new book adventure!
Some students read their book at Books on Blankets later in the day! Thank you to our families for your support of this Book Week event!

Book Week Incursion – Treasure Hunt
Our students in Pre-Primary to Year 4 enjoyed a wonderful performance by Perform Education, and were taken on a musical treasure hunt, exploring the themes of sustainability and our connection with the natural environment. The students also celebrated how books and reading can bring everyone together and help us understand the world around us.

Celebrating our Book Week Adventures in Music!
To celebrate Book Week 2025, students in rooms 4.2, 4.5 and 4.6 have been learning about woodwind instruments and the sounds they make, by listening to excerpts from Peter and the Wolf (Prokofiev). See here for a link to a brief video that features the main characters. In this classic story, Peter saves the wolf from hunters. We hear the bird, duck, cat and grandfather characters depicted through the woodwind instruments, the flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon. Each student drew a picture of their favourite of these 4 characters, and the linked woodwind instrument, which have been collated to celebrate Book Week on one of our doors in Music …
Which is the most popular character from Peter and the Wolf?

Thank you for supporting our Music program at RCC, and please get in touch if you have any questions or need to share information about your child’s learning needs relevant to Music.
With best wishes, Shelley Gorman

Healthy Snack Stalls
Our Healthy Snack Stalls project has continued in full swing, with students getting comfortable in their new shoes (or aprons!) as real-life business owners!
Dabbling in Media Arts, each company visited the high school recording studio with Mr Holliday to record their catchy jingles, ready to be played over the PA system to drum up excitement. During a math lesson, students used laptops to place their Coles orders online, converting quantities of ingredients needed into packaged items available for purchase. Companies then met to develop their own policies for greeting and serving customers, as they further developed their individual brands in a series of English lessons.
The thrill of receiving our Coles delivery was hard to beat! Students unpacked everything with eager hands, carefully checking items off against their receipts and stocking the fresh ingredients in the kitchen. Our first bake-up followed the day after, with two representatives from each company cooking their signature recipes under the mentorship of one of our Year 10 helpers. All those lessons on adding and converting fractions suddenly seemed very important as we made multiple batches at a time! With trays sliding in and out of ovens, all sorts of wonderful smells started wafting from the Home Ec building.
Our very first sales day was a huge success, thanks to the amazing support of our school community. Queues stretched out in all directions as our Year 5/6 students put their mental maths to the test, calculating totals, counting back change and keeping the line moving. Customer service skills were front and centre as they welcomed, served and farewelled staff and students with professionalism and pride... when we remembered to, that is. After all our practising, finally having real customers and scenarios in front of us was a bit exciting and overwhelming at times!
Healthy Snack Stalls will continue to operate every Thursday until Week 8, which is the final chance to purchase. Please remember to bring cash to support our budding entrepreneurs! All profits go towards new outdoor play equipment for our Early Childhood students.

MultiCultural Netball Carnival
On Friday, 15 August, our enthusiastic Year 4 and 5 students arrived at school bright and early, ready for an exciting day at the Multicultural Netball Carnival held at Matthews Netball Centre. With the sun shining, it was perfect for a day filled with fun, teamwork, and healthy competition.
The Year 5 team started strong with an impressive first-round win and showed great determination throughout the day, finishing with 2 wins out of their 5 games. The Year 4 team also displayed excellent teamwork and spirit, engaging in several close matches, although they were unable to secure a win.
A big thank you to our wonderful Year 8 students, Francesca Murray and Sofia Delaney, for their valuable support in umpiring and scoring throughout the day. Your help was greatly appreciated!

Brownes Dairy and Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm
Our Year 5 and 6 students recently enjoyed an exciting excursion to Brownes Dairy in Balcatta and the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm to explore where our dairy products come from and the role farms play in our lives.
At Brownes, students toured the factory from impressive viewing platforms, watching machinery and workers in action. They learned how milk is produced, the importance of food safety, and how far Brownes products travel to reach homes across WA. Brownes is Australia’s oldest and largest dairy – and proudly WA owned! Students loved taste-testing different yoghurts in the innovation kitchen, experimenting with curds and whey, and even milking a cow!
At the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm, students worked in small groups and learnt about animal care and farm safety. They had a brilliant time riding the tractor train, cuddling bunnies and guinea pigs, bottle-feeding lambs and goats, feeding kangaroos and birds, and patting cows and horses. There were plenty of giggles, especially when dancing with cheeky cockatoos!
This excursion supported our Technologies learning on Food and Fibre Production and also connected to our studies in Science, Maths, and English. It was a hands-on and memorable way for students to connect classroom learning with the real world.

Shakespeare Incursion – Years 9/10 English
One ancient grudge, one life changing connection, and one society forever changed.
On Thursday 21st August, the Year 9/10s were treated to a performance of Such Sweet Sorrow, presented by the Players from Bell Shakespeare, who returned to Roleystone Community College as part of Book Week 2025. To consolidate our studies of Romeo and Juliet, this stage show retells Shakespeare’s classic love story from the moment our main characters meet to their tragic conclusion, via modern commentary interspersed with text from the original play. It also caused us to ask who was really to blame for the events that unfolded in Romeo and Juliet – was it everyone’s fault or was everyone a victim?
The performance was incredibly interactive as the Players engaged with the students during and after the show, and teachers were encouraged to also perform on stage alongside them. It proved to be a hit amongst both staff and students, with many agreeing it was hilarious, surprising, and made tackling a Shakespearean text seem not so scary after all.
A special thanks goes to Team Oberon (John, Mariska, and Liv) for coming out and performing for us.

Kindy Star Gazers and Gardeners!
What’s in the sky?
Kindy 2 have been observing the sky and answering our terms inquiry question.
We noticed the clouds moving and that some clouds were grey and some were white. We watched an aeroplane, and some birds go by in the sky.
We then went back to the classroom and drew what we saw. Over time the students will pose “wonder” questions to lead the inquiry plan.
So far, we’ve wondered:
- “Can a bird fly through a cloud?”
- “Why does the moon change size?”
- “What shapes can clouds make?”
- “Why is the sky blue?”
We can’t wait to continue exploring the sky!

Gardening in Kindy 2
Week 3 this term brought some sunshine! We spent the afternoons raking back our garden behind the classroom, moving rocks and planting a few flowers that were donated by a lovely parent! Next is mulching and some more planting. The wonderful Mrs Biggs has been working hard behind the scenes to upcycle a mud kitchen, that will be placed once we have finished mulching! More work to be done. We love to keep you updated!

Room 2.5 Spaghetti Science
The Year Ones in Room 2.5 love Science! Lately we have been exploring the properties of spaghetti. First, we compared the properties of cooked and uncooked spaghetti and talked about reversible and irreversible changes. Then we worked in pairs competing to build the tallest tower using spaghetti and marshmallows.

Technological Advances in Room 4.5!
The students in Room 4.5 have been given the opportunity to engage with a range of technology throughout the year, including the highly fascinating Spheros. Students got to explore driving their Spheros around an obstacle course before racing each other to see who the fastest Sphero driver of them all was.
Ms Morton

Drama
It’s been a wonderfully creative term in Drama, with each year level exploring new skills, stories, and performance techniques. From superheroes and soundscapes to scripts and physical theatre, our students have been building confidence and having fun while learning to express themselves in imaginative ways.
Pre-primary/Year 1
Our youngest performers have wrapped up their exciting unit on superheroes and villains! Students created vibrant superhero masks and developed their own unique characters, bringing them to life on stage. They completed daring missions with creativity and flair and are now ready to leap into the magical world of fairy tales.
Year 2
Year 2 students have been exploring how different settings influence a performance. They experimented with creating soundscapes to enhance the atmosphere and bring their stories to life, continuing to deepen their understanding of character and environment.
Year 3
This term, Year 3 has been learning about important theatre roles, including backstage crew responsibilities, through the story Lola Saves the Show. Next, they will channel their creativity into designing hair, makeup, and costumes for various characters, connecting performance with presentation.
Year 4
Year 4 has been diving into mood and atmosphere in performance. Students are now preparing to explore the features of play scripts, reading through them and experimenting with expression and timing to enhance their performances.
Year 5
In Year 5, students have been focusing on script work. They are becoming confident in following stage directions and adding tone to their readings. Soon, they will investigate the factors that influence drama and its history, adding depth to their theatrical understanding.
Year 6
Year 6 students have been creating imaginative dances inspired by physical theatre. They selected themes through a lucky dip and choreographed performances full of creativity and expression, showcasing their understanding of movement and storytelling.
I am so proud of the creativity, teamwork, and confidence our students have shown this term. We look forward to seeing how they continue to grow as performers and storytellers in the coming weeks!
Miss Fisher

Choir
This term we are delighted to welcome our new Year 4 singers to the RCC choir, along with a few fresh faces from Years 5 and 6! Their enthusiasm and energy have made our ensemble stronger, fuller, and more vibrant than ever. Together, we’ve begun learning some beautiful new pieces, and the choir is already sounding fantastic as a larger group.
Looking ahead, students are preparing for some exciting upcoming performances: our first appearances as a bigger choir at both the Lower and Upper Primary assemblies later this year, as well as our special Remembrance Day performance in November. We can’t wait to share our voices with the school community!
Miss Fisher and Ms Gorman

Indonesian News!
Indonesia celebrates its Independence Day on the 17 August. Year’s 1-3 learnt how the Indonesian people celebrate its Independence and learnt the Indonesian coat of arms, Garuda Pancasila.

Bush Ranger Cadets Update
During this week’s Cadets meeting, students gathered down by the Secondary Area to enjoy some outdoor cooking. After collecting sticks and building up some coals, they prepared their own jaffles with a choice of tinned spaghetti, baked beans, or braised steak and onion. Cooking them over the fire in jaffle irons, the group enjoyed a tasty reward for their efforts.
We are also very excited to be putting the finishing touches on our preparations for the upcoming Bibbulmun Hike from Wednesday to Friday of Week 6. Our Year 8, 9 and 10 Cadets will be tackling 40 kilometres of the Bibbulmun Track over the three days. With the weather looking promising, the group is eager to take on the challenge!

Exploring the World Through Geography

Roleystone CC Takes on the Australian Geography Competition
Last term, selected classes from Years 7 to 10 proudly participated in the Australian Geography Competition, a nationwide event designed to test students' geographical knowledge and understanding of the world around them. This was the first time RCC had taken part in this national competition.
The competition challenged students with a variety of questions. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to apply what they've learned in class to real-world scenarios, and to see how their skills measure up on a national scale.
All participants received official participation certificates to recognise their efforts and engagement in the competition. These certificates celebrate not only their involvement, but also their curiosity and commitment to learning about the world we live in.
A big congratulations to all students involved! Special mention goes out to the following students for their exceptional efforts:
Achieving a Credit: Sebastian Douglas, Nancy Jones, Ella Rorbach (Year 7); Lalana Lawrence (Year 9); Marshall Prince and Rory Robinson (Year 10)
Achieving a Distinction: Zoe Taylor (Year 7) and Jude Fredericks (Year 10)
Achieving a High Distinction: Tomas Lison (Year 8)
And for being in the Top 1% of his year group nationwide: Charlie Butler (Year 7)
Well done to everyone.

Lego Robotics – First Lego League Challenge 2025
Our Lego Robotics students are buzzing with excitement as the official map for the 2025 First Lego League Challenge has finally arrived! The group wasted no time and eagerly spent their recess and lunch breaks assembling the intricate Lego Mission Models. With the challenge field now ready, the next step is programming and testing their robot to take on the missions. The students can’t wait to dive into coding and see their hard work in action as they prepare for the big challenge later this year.

Year 10 and Kindy Kids get Creative
Art Teacher, Grace Allison was recently asked to put her Year 10 class to work with the Kindy class from Room 1.1 and together they have created something beautiful!
The Kindy students decided they wanted to add some stepping stones to a beautiful garden they’ve been working on! So, what better way than to put the Year 10 students to work. The Kindy students designed, and the Year 10s created. The class from Kindy visited the art room to see the stones being made, and they can’t wait until they are dry and ready to finish off our garden!
Thank you to Miss Allison and her Year 10 students!
