Principal’s Report
Dear Families,
As we come to the end of what’s been a busy and rewarding term, I would like to say a big thank you for your continued support. Your involvement in your child’s education makes a real difference, and we as a school appreciate the time and care you put in.
This term has been packed with learning, growth, and plenty of memorable moments. You’ll have seen this reflected in the many fantastic articles and updates shared by our teachers — it’s clear that students have been engaged in a wide range of rich and meaningful experiences.
By now, you should have received your child’s school report. We encourage you to take some time to go through it together, celebrate the wins, and chat about any areas for improvement. These conversations can be a great way to help your child reflect and feel proud of their progress.
Thank you to those who joined us for Parent Night — it was lovely to connect and share insights into your child’s learning. If you weren’t able to make it, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher. We’re always happy to offer support and advice, and we value the opportunity to work together.
When parents and teachers work in partnership, the impact on student learning is powerful. Together, we help create a strong, supportive environment where children can thrive.
As we head into the school holidays, we hope you’re able to enjoy some well-earned rest and quality time with your children. Whether you're heading away or staying close to home, we wish you a safe and happy break filled with laughter and connection.
Kind Regards,
Lauren

New Robots
Look what has arrived at Roleystone Community College! We are excited to have a new delivery of LEGO® Education Spike Prime Robots at our school. Our 10 new robots will be well utilised by our Upper Primary students in classrooms as part of their Digital Technology Curriculum learning; and by our Secondary Year 10 Robotics Team, as part of their Teaching and Learning in the Specialist Robotics program. With these robots, the students can create an endless number of innovative robotics projects, sparking their creativity and engineering skills. They will also engage students in playful learning that encourages them to think critically, analyse data and proto-type hands-on solutions for problems with real-world relevance—regardless of their learning level. Students will also use the robots in various competitions and events throughout the year, including the Bibbulmun Robotics Showcase for primary students and the First Lego League Challenge for secondary students.

2025 Primary School Public Speaking Competition

On Monday 9 June nine very brave Year 5 and 6 students delivered a three-minute speech to their peers, parents and a panel of judges in this year's in-school final of the Public Speaking Competition.
The Primary School Public Speaking Competition is an inter-electorate competition for students in the State electorates of Armadale, Darling Range, Jandakot and Oakford, to gain experience and test their skills in the art of Public Speaking. The event is run in partnership with local Members Hugh Jones MLA, Tony Buti MLA, Stephen Pratt MLA and Yaz Mubarakai MLA.
The topic for this year's speeches was 'My Dream Job for the Future'. The presenting students wowed the audience with their thoughts on the ideal job.
- Kai dreams of being an astronaut that one day, settles on Neptune.
- Sam wants to care for elephants as a Zoologist.
- Jono is set on becoming an inventor who thinks outside the box.
- Leo aspires to help and care for patients as an anaesthesiologist.
- Bellamy is keen to explore aging as a longevity specialist and how we can live to 150 years old.
- Emilia is inspired by her learning in The Resilience Project and wants to help others as a psychologist.
- Aliyah dreams of being at one with nature as a botanist.
- Robin wants to offer the best care to zoo animals as a veterinarian.
- Sydnie seeks justice for all as a barrister.
Whilst all the speakers did an outstanding presentation, only three progressed to the Darling Range Zone Competition final, which was held at Byford Secondary College.
Congratulations to Kai, Leo and Emilia who were selected to represent the College.
Principal Ms Findlay and Associate Principal Mrs Burns accompanied the students to the Zone Competition and only the two highest scoring students from this stage go on to represent their school and Darling Range at the Grand Final at the Parliament of Western Australia.
The competition was fierce at the Zone final, but our students, Kai and Leo Alestalo were outstanding and have made it to the Grand Final!
Emilia Plowman also performed brilliantly, but our commiserations to Emilia, as she only just missed out on one of the top spots.
Kai and Leo will now head to Parliament House on Friday 8 August to take part in the Grand Final!
Well done to all our students, who took part – what a fabulous experience. You are all superstars!
Our thanks go to the Honourable Hugh Jones MLA, Member for Darling Range for providing this wonderful opportunity for our students to develop and showcase their public speaking skills.

Kindy News!
Sounds are Super!
P is for Popping Fun!
This term our Kindy 2 students have been working hard on their beginning sound recognition. We begin each week with our mystery sound box.
Week 7 focused on “P”. Our activities included popping popcorn, pompom painting, peg push, push the pebbles, cut the paper.

“I” is for igloo
Kindy 2 loved making igloos for the sound “I”.
Despite the colder weather we loved using ice blocks to build igloos! What a fun way to explore the “I” sound!
We love learning our sounds in a hands-on way!

Insect Fun in Kindy 1!
How many legs does an insect have?
How many body parts?
What do insects need to live?
Where do they live?
These are some of the inquiry questions our students in Kindy Room 1.2 have been investigating this term. We started our topic by going on an insect hunt. We left our Kindy area and found lots of insects in the 'big kids' nature play area. We had great fun becoming a scientist and finding all the insects on our sheet. Once collected, our insects have had a new home in our classroom. Here we have observed them and learnt all about them. We have made them out of playdough and natural materials, we have drawn and painted them, read books and much, much more.
We also found our Talk4Writing Hungry Caterpillar in our garden! Did you know our caterpillar told us a story about his friend who ate and ate and ate and then one day just disappeared! But a beautiful butterfly was seen fluttering around him! We are doing a wonderful job at retelling the Very Hungry Caterpillar story and using actions to help us.
Some of the things we now know about insects are:

Mrs Gloyn
Mrs Cirillo and the students of Kindy Room 1.2 would like to say a BIG thank you to Mrs Gloyn who has helped us this term during Mrs Hooper's absence. She has helped us to clean our room (especially when we play with playdough, sand or rice), helped us to learn our letter sounds and numerals and helped us with drawing, cutting, painting and much, much more. Thank you.
Mrs Cirillo
A Whole Lot of Farm and Fishing Fun
Thanks to Mrs Cogle and Mrs Norris for sharing, we have now borrowed a pretend farmyard, complete with pond, and set it up in PP2.
We have enjoyed fishing, growing veggies, looking after the farm animals, dressing up and having some great fun with our friends.
Ms Mantell
Room 2.2

Phonetics Fun in PP!
The Pre-Primary students in room 2.3 have been learning all about the phonemes
‘igh’, ‘oa’, ‘ai’, ‘ow’, and ‘oi’.
They have been using their creativity and artistic talents to make some wonderful
pictures, and they have written a caption to go with each one.
We think their work is amazing and we are very proud of their efforts.
Room 2.3 staff

Pizzas in PP!
Pizza making in Room 2.1 with Kristina and Seb Sindermann was fantastic fun and the pizzas were yummy!!

Mapping Roleystone
This term, in Room 4.3, the Year 2 students have been completing a project as part of our Geography learning about our local area. We have been learning about built features of places and have made the local buildings in Roleystone and our own houses. Additionally, we have learnt that places can be managed and have created parks such as Cross Park, The Canning Dam and Borrello Park. A natural feature of Roleystone is Roley Pools which we have also made for our Map of Roleystone. We then created a large map of the roads of Roleystone and placed all our creations where they are located on the map.
Ms Longyear

Information overload in Room 4.4!
Room 4.4 have been learning all about information texts this term and have been busy researching an Australian animal of our choice. We have learnt so many interesting facts about kangaroos, echidnas, dingoes, platypus, quokkas and more! We have used desktop computers during our computer lab time as well as our class iPads to find out key information for our research sheets. We will turn these key ideas into an amazing information text.
Ms Olivia Gorey

Shadow Chasing on a Sunny Winter's Day
The Year 3 students in Room 4.6 took full advantage of the unusually sunny winter days this term to explore the wonders of light and shadows. With chalk, and curiosity in hand, they headed outside to trace their own shadows at different times throughout the day.
What started as tall, long shadows in the crisp morning sunlight gradually shifted. By midday, the students noticed something surprising—their shadows had become much shorter and had begun to lean! As the sun moved across the sky, the shadows stretched out again and leant even further.
This hands-on investigation helped bring science to life, giving students a real-time experience of how the Earth’s movement affects the position of the sun—and in turn, the length and direction of shadows. It was a perfect blend of observation, inquiry, and good old-fashioned chalk- drawing.
I’m proud of how our young scientists made thoughtful predictions and shared their findings with one another. And while the sun may not shine this brightly every winter’s day, I hope the memories—and learning—will last well beyond the season.
Mrs Norman

Civics and Citizenship
In Room 4.2 we have been studying civics and citizenship and where we live in HASS. We worked really hard designing our town, deciding on the name, the rules and laws and creating our buildings. It turned out brilliantly! All students also identified the important people in our school community and wrote thank you cards to them for their contribution to our school. It has been a great learning experience.
Mrs Warren

Tiny Paws, Big Lessons
In Room 5.3, our pocket pets—Mayhem, Mischief, Muffin, and Marshmallow—continue to bring learning and laughter as we extend our studies in Science, Math, Health, and English.
We’ve been experimenting with a variety of environments to see just how adaptable mice really are. In our bakery setup, a loaf of bread was transformed into a mouse-sized hideaway, hollowed out with bread shavings scattered across the cage. In the party-themed space, they pulled down paper chains, nibbled streamers from the ceiling, and dragged everything into a cosy corner to build a nest. The mice never fail to rise to a challenge, always coming up with a strategy to overcome each new setback. These valuable lessons in resilience are ones we’re striving to embody ourselves!
In Maths, we’ve put our data skills into practice, with students predicting which mouse would record the fastest time in our custom-built maze and we will be tracking the results over the week. Our whiteboard is now covered in colourful graphs as we present the data in a variety of ways.
In Science, we’ve taken a detour into genetics as part of our biology studies. Inspired by Muffin’s pregnancy and the arrival of her six pups, we’ve been making predictions about coat colour, fur texture, and eye colour using our newfound knowledge of dominant and recessive traits. Each day brings new milestones: ears appeared by day 4, a fine fuzz by day 7, and tiny teeth by day 11. Their eyes are just beginning to open, and we can’t get enough of their wobbly steps and soft squeaks!
Our English work is now decorating the walls, with students researching and writing detailed reports on four native Australian mice: the Dusky Hopping Mouse, Smoky Mouse, Ash-grey Mouse, and Pebble-mound Mouse. Learning about the diversity and adaptations of these native species has deepened our appreciation for the tiny lives we share our world with. Many of us didn't realise Australia has native mice, which are nothing like the pests in our chicken sheds!
Mrs Fletcher

Ceramic Flower Fun!
Mrs Fletcher’s very clever students in Room 5.3 have been creating some very beautiful ceramic flowers. They were inspired to design the colourful creations by Japanese Artist, Yayoi Kusama’s ‘Flowers that Bloom in the Cosmos” 2022 art project. The sculpture was commissioned by the Art Gallery of NSW. The students have very kindly allowed us to display their flowers in the front office, so pop on it to have a look! They are amazing!
Well done to the students and to Mrs Fletcher.

From Farm to Plate in Block 5!
Room 5.6 and 5.7 had an exciting fortnight exploring the journey from farm to plate. Our reading sessions focused on the fascinating processes behind eggs and milk. We delved into research, discovering how these everyday items make their way from farms to our tables. To bring our learning to life, we cooked delicious organic home-grown eggs and whipped up refreshing milkshakes. It was a delightful and educational experience for everyone!
Ms Kell

Indonesian News!
Selamat pagi!
Year 1 students have been learning about the famous Indonesian folktale, Keong Emas (The Golden Snail). "Keong Emas" is a popular Javanese folktale about a princess who is transformed into a golden snail by an evil witch. The story emphasizes themes of kindness, transformation, and the power of love.

Whereas the year 3 students have learned about family members. They can write about them using simple adjectives in Indonesian.
Selamat berlibur semua!

Music News!
Learning a new instrument is great for our brains!
Learning a musical instrument has multiple benefits for children, including language skills, spatial awareness and fine motor control. Our brains light up when we listen to music, and this multiplies when we make music, so that our entire brain is activated.
Please click on this link to watch a video explanation.
Throughout Term 2, students across the primary years have been learning a range of instruments, including percussion and chime-bars, recorder and ukulele.
Many students in Year 1 and 2 are making good progress towards playing simple high-low melodies, such as ‘Starlight Starbright’, on our chime-bars. They have also been demonstrating their in-time rhythm- and beat-keeping skills using percussion instruments such as djembe and tambour drums, tambourines, and claves.
Some of our chime bars used in Music.

Students in Years 3 and 4 have enthusiastically and respectfully been practising recorder in class, with many mastering how to hold their instruments and play the notes G and low E. Please watch this space in early Term 3, as I will be starting a recess recorder club for interested students in Years 5 and 6!
How to play a low E on the recorder!

Many Year 5 and 6 students are now able to strum C and F chords on the ukulele while singing folk songs such as ‘Seashell’. Check it out on the link.
These students have quickly progressed to performing this in canon. A goal for Term 3 will be to learn how to smoothly change between these chords to play songs like ‘Alouetta’, as seen on this link.
How to play a C chord on the ukulele!

Thank you for supporting our Music program at RCC, and please get in touch if you have any questions or need to share information about your child’s learning needs relevant to Music.
With best wishes,

A Taste of Term 2 in Home Economics
It has been a busy and delicious term in the Home Economics department! All our cooking classes have been buzzing with creativity as students tackled assessment tasks that challenged them to develop and cook their own unique recipes.
Year 7s have been focusing on the most important meal of the day: breakfast. For their assessment, they were tasked with creating a nutritious and delicious morning meal. The results were impressive and diverse, with students preparing everything from açai bowls and waffles to bacon and egg muffins, hash browns, smoothies, and even a Moroccan shakshuka. The challenge was to incorporate a wide range of food groups, ensuring their bodies could enjoy the benefits of a variety of nutrients.
This term, our Year 8s have been mastering comforting staple foods like stuffed baked potatoes, mac and cheese, and nachos. Their assessment saw them designing a dish using chicken mince, which led to a fantastic array of creative ideas, including sausage rolls, pizzas, chicken spaghetti Bolognese, san choy bow, nasi goreng, and chicken dumpling soup. We also explored how common recipes can be adapted to suit individual tastes, nutritional needs, available ingredients, and dietary preferences. One class was fortunate enough to have a guest appearance from local chef Seb Sindermann, who demonstrated the incredible versatility of a simple pancake batter.

The Year 9 Takeaway Foods at Home students transformed into restaurateurs, designing meals for popular food delivery apps. For their assessment, they created a meal they would order themselves, cooked it, and then used photographs of their creation to design an advertisement for their business. The menu featured tempting options like burritos, fried rice, and possibly the best butter chicken I have ever tasted.
Our Year 10 World of Food students were tasked with exploring a global cuisine with which they had minimal experience. They collaborated to plan and cook a three-course meal, choosing Nigerian staple foods as their inspiration. The class adventurously prepared boli (roasted plantains), fufu (cassava dumplings) with chicken wings in a vegetable-rich sauce, and coconut candy for dessert. It was fantastic to see the class embrace this challenge and to experience foods I had never tried myself.
Finally, the Catering class spent the term planning and hosting a "Fusion Feast" for some special guests. The students were challenged to invent fusion dishes that combined elements not typically found together, without relying on existing recipes. Their inventive creations included pierogi spring rolls, green curry and roti pies, curry nachos, cheeseburger pizzas, waffles with bacon, and churros with a s'mores dip.

It has been wonderful to hear that several students have taken the recipes we've worked on in class and recreated them at home for their families. If your child has been in a cooking class this term, why not ask them to showcase their new skills and cook dinner tonight?

Arts Showcase
Year 9/10 Graphics – Album covers reimagined
This term, our Year 9 and 10 Graphics (Media Arts) students embraced the world of digital design by creating striking album covers for music artists of their choice.
Using Photoshop and professional design techniques, students explored how visual elements like typography, colour, layout, and imagery can capture the sound and style of an artist. Whether inventing a brand-new album or reimagining an existing one, each student brought their chosen genre to life in a creative and visually compelling way.
They considered everything from heavy metal to bold pop aesthetics, reflecting key genre conventions while still making the design their own. The covers are a vibrant mix of originality, digital skill, and music-inspired storytelling.

Year 10 Visual Arts – Sculpting through contemporary styles
In Visual Arts this term, our Year 10 students have been sculpting impressive clay busts inspired by art movements such as Cubism, Surrealism, and Expressionism.
Each sculpture reflects the student’s individual personality and artistic voice while connecting to a chosen contemporary style. From angular forms to emotional distortion, students pushed their creative boundaries through their designs and planning work.
While the clay sculptures are nearly complete, with only painting remaining, the results already show thoughtful experimentation, personal expression, and growing technical skill. These busts highlight the creativity and skill students have developed throughout the project.
