Principal’s Report
Dear Families,
I’m pleased to be writing my first newsletter as Principal and to share how wonderful these first few weeks have been. From the moment I arrived, I’ve felt truly welcomed by students, staff, and families, and I’m grateful to be part of such a warm and supportive school community.
Already, we’ve had some fantastic events that showcase the energy and enthusiasm of our college community. Our ANZAC Day service was a meaningful occasion, with students demonstrating great respect as they honoured those who served. The Junior Primary Assembly was another highlight—Mrs Cogle’s Pre-Primary class brought ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ to life with an outstanding performance, and it was brilliant to see their confidence and creativity on stage.
The Year 7 Camp was a great adventure, filled with challenges, teamwork, and plenty of fun. Our Mother’s Day Stall was a lovely opportunity for students to choose heartfelt gifts and celebrate the special women in their lives, a big thank you to our dedicated P&C team for organising this.
On top of all the activities, it’s been fantastic to see students settling into their classes and engaging in their learning with enthusiasm, which I’ve been able to see firsthand in my visits to classes. As we move through the term, assessments will be a key focus, with students and staff working hard to demonstrate their progress before Semester One reports are prepared.
There’s so much to look forward to in the coming weeks, and I’m excited to continue getting to know our school and its wonderful community. Thank you again for such a warm welcome—I look forward to sharing more updates as the term unfolds!
Kind Regards
Lauren.

Students on School Grounds after School
After school, we would ask that parents vacate the school grounds by 3.20pm unless there is an organised activity taking place (e.g. netball training, football training, Cadets, Homework Club). This is to support the safety of students.
This includes the Kindergarten and Pre-primary playgrounds.
There is an expectation that normal school rules are followed by students before and after school and that parents are actively supervising their child/children while they are on school grounds.
Thank you.
Natasha Burke
Associate Principal
Conveyance Allowance for School Buses

For those that don't have bus access from their place of residence, they can apply for financial assistance that covers the cost of fuel.
Please clink on this link to find out more information of what you can claim through the WA Education Department School Bus Service.
Parking Changes
This is to inform our Parents/Guardians to please be aware that the City of Armadale is installing new bollards on the grass verge on Brookes Road near the kiss and drop area. This is to stop people parking over nearby pathways and will help to protect our student’s safety.
The school has been informed that the works will commence soon.
Kindy 2026 Applications
We are taking applications for our Kindy 2026 program. Please pick up an application form from the front office or download one from our website. Please ensure you have the relevant documentation to accompany it.

Pre-Primary Re-enrolment

Year 4-6 Assembly Friday 11 April
Hosted by Room 5.5 Year 4
As part of The Resilience Project, we have been learning about Empathy and Kindness. We know that when we are kind to others, we feel good about ourselves, as well as helping the other person. We learned a dance, a song and created role plays about kindness and how we can share it with our friends.
Mrs Crocker

Congratulations to Ms Kell’s class for winning the Golden Broom competition. They were awarded the prize at our last Assembly in Term 1.

Aussie of The Month - April
Congratulations to Year 5 student Max Clune who was awarded our Aussie of the Month for April. Max has shown the value of mateship. He has been recognised for including others, helping students in need and showing genuine kindness and compassion.

Secondary Briefing – Friday 11 April
There were lots of accolades handed out to our students and Principal Mark Brookes at the briefing on his last day at RCC at the end of Term One. Our School Captains sent him off in style with each delivering a lovely speech about his nearly ten years at the school, and what a fantastic role model he has been. Thanks Marshall and Olivia!
Merit Certificates
Congratulations to our students who received an Honour Award.

Principals Honours
One of Mr Brookes’ last important thing to attend to, was to hand out the 2024 Principal Honours badges. Congratulations to those students who received a certificate.

Attendance Certificates
At this Assembly, Mr Coetzer and Mr Burns also acknowledged our students who had scored a perfect 100% attendance in Term 1. This is a great achievement and means they are engaged with school and their work and marks are benefitting from that engagement. These students received a certificate. Also acknowledged were our students who just missed that mark, with a 95% attendance.
Congratulations to all of them.

Easter Hat Parade – Thursday 10 April
We had an egg-citing morning at the Parade in Term 1. The students made their own easter hats – and they were all amazing! We had a huge turnout of families come to cheer on the parade and our student councillors did a magnificent job of running the proceedings – which went off like clockwork! Thank you also to the P&C for providing some egg-xtra easter prizes- which some of our students were lucky enough to win!

ANZAC Service 2025
On Wednesday 30April, we held our ANZAC Commemoration Service. Every year, staff and students gather to recognise all those men and women that have served our country in the armed forces to allow us to live the life we lead today. Present at this years’ service were:
Hugh Jones MLA, representing Sabine Winton, Minister for Education, Ruth Butterfield, Mayor of Armadale, Warrant Officer Class One Stephen White, 11th/28th Battalion, The Royal Western Australian Regiment, Mike Fairweather, Armadale RSL Sub-Branch, Leah Whitford representing the Roleystone Community College P & C, Members of the Roleystone and Karragullen Seniors Club, Matthew Plowman, Bushfire Service, Noel Plowman, Jess Pain Manager, Bendigo Community Bank Roleystone-Karragullen, Lieutenant Kim McVea and Cadets of 52 ACU Army Cadet Unit, Armadale.
As in previous years, we had the cadets forming the Catafalque Party. This year, we recognised the men and women who left to go to World War 2, using Roleystone and Karragullen as their address. This was a moving tribute. Please take the time to visit the memorial on the side of the library, recognising these men and women.
The students should be commended on their respectful behaviour throughout the service.
Thank you to our teachers for working with their classes to create the displays. A special mention to Grace Allison, our Art teacher who worked with students from across the college to create the ‘Poppy Walk’.
On behalf of the College a huge thank you to Mrs Georgina McVea for all her efforts in creating the World War 2 recognition and all her hard work co-ordinating all the displays and poppies.
Also, a big thankyou from RCC to parent and Roleystone local florist, Nadia Ghilarducci, who created many of the beautiful wreaths laid on the day. They were magnificent.
Mrs Brophy
Associate Principal

Kindy’s ANZAC Recognition
Even though the Kindy’s didn’t attend the ANZAC service we went on a special walk to commemorate. We loved looking at the poppies and came back to the classroom and practiced drawing our own.
Mrs Ashboth

Year 4 Room 5.5 ANZAC Artist
We were super proud of Jack's artwork that was used on the back cover of the school ANZAC service program. He often amazes us with his artistic talents. Other students also created beautiful art inspired by the poppy as a symbol of ANZAC remembrance.
Mrs Crocker

Pizza shop fun in Kindy!
To start off Term Two Kindy 1.2 had a pizza shop in their dramatic play area. The students became customers, chefs and restaurant managers! We absolutely loved making pizza! They even tried their hand at pizza dough making! We rolled, flattened and squished the dough! Our toppings included ham, pineapple, mushrooms and cheese! Yummo!
Mrs Ashboth

Pre-Primary Sport
In Pre-Primary, we have sport every Wednesday. Last Wednesday we got to choose from exciting games and activities. One of those was the huge parachute. We had to try and fling the balls into the air but not let them fall to the ground. We also got to run under the parachute to the other side before it came down onto us. It was such awesome fun, and we hope to do it again!
Pre-Primary

Room 2.5 Mother's Day Art
The children in Room 2.5 created these beautiful pictures of flower filled vases for Mother's Day. They started by using blue marker pens to draw their designs on their vases. Then they used water colour paints to paint their flowers.
Happy Mother's Day!
Mrs Heavey

The Resilience Project
The Resilience Project
We have been loving The Resilience Project in Room 2.6! We have been doing lots of fun activities to practice identifying our emotions and coming up with strategies to manage big feelings. We made sliders to go on our desk to show how we are feeling throughout the day.
"I like The Resilience Project because we get to do mindfulness and learn how to stop feeling sad." - Zoe
"I like The Resilience Project because it makes me feel calm." - Heath
"I like The Resilience Project because we get to do mindfulness." - Amelia
"I like The Resilience Project because we do lots of fun stuff." – Lorcan

Mice are in da house!
In Room 5.3, we have been captivated by the arrival of four tiny classroom pets. Mayhem, Mischief, Muffin and Marshmallow have us wrapped around their little tails!
In English, our ongoing story about what the mice get up to in an imaginary world where they can talk has given us plenty of giggles as we practise writing longer, more detailed answers in preparation for high school essays. As homework, each student has been assigned a different piece of literature featuring a mouse as the heroine - from Stuart Little to Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. This will lead to a book review, which they will present to the class later this term.
In Maths, to support our work on area and perimeter, we measured the huge, converted fish tank our pocket pets live in. This helped us select materials that would fit into the mouse enclosure when we headed out on a bushwalk to gather natural materials.
In Science, we're learning about animal adaptations. When we changed their usual environment to bushland, we were delighted to watch how Mayhem, Mischief, Muffin and Marshmallow made a nest of leaves in place of their shredded tissue bungalow and swapped their usual pet shop pellets for seeds and live mealworms! We're currently researching how native Australian mice have adapted to their surroundings and are fascinated by the Dusky Hopping Mouse's extended hind legs and the Pebble-Mound Mouse's ability to find safety in its burrow during bushfires.
There will be more exciting investigations ahead as we construct mouse houses and learn about genetics later in the term!
Mrs Fletcher

Year 5’s Elections!
Room 5.6 and 5.7
Year 5 students in Room 5.6 and 5.7 have been busy learning about democracy through an exciting project! Students created their own political parties, developed policies, designed campaign materials, and delivered persuasive speeches to win their classmates' votes.
Each party worked hard to come up with realistic ideas to improve our school and community, focusing on areas like education, the environment, and well-being. Their creative posters, catchy slogans, and confident speeches showed a great understanding of leadership and how policies can shape a community.
We finished with a class election. Congratulations to the ‘Red Roley’s Party’ for being elected as the winning party!
Ms Yaksich and Ms Kell
Missing File: Jemma Kell Politics.jpeg
Room 5.3
Mrs Fletcher’s Year 5/6 class has been exploring the Australian Parliamentary System too .The students’ study has also included, them constructing scale models of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Some of the students were the architects, designing the layout and setting, while others focused on symbolic elements like the ceremonial mace, flags, and coat of arms. They carefully selected LEGO mini figures to represent each of the political figures. Everyone was kept very busy, and the completed houses of parliament are works of art and absolutely brilliant!
Well done Room 5.3!

Reading Fun in Room 5.5
Reading was fun this week with a text called Brain Freeze. We learned ways to make a brain freeze headache go away. After reading and finding out some strategies, we created instructional posters and ate ice cream to put our ideas to the test! Not everyone experienced brain freeze, but it was delicious!
We would like to thank the lovely people who put together the Mother's Day Stall. We really appreciate the effort that goes into the wonderful shopping experience you provide for us. No spoilers! Mums will just have to wait and see what is in our shopping bags! Thanks also to the parents for being sustainable and sending students along with their own reusable bags.
Mrs Crocker

Primary Drama News
As we launch into Term 2, our drama classroom has been buzzing with creativity, movement, and imagination. Students across all year levels have eagerly jumped back into developing their drama skills and building on the exciting work from Term 1.
- Pre-Primary and Year 1 students have started the term by recapping what they learnt last term about what drama is and who is involved—including the roles of actors and audiences. They explored how each plays an important part in a performance. Now, they are building on that foundation by beginning to explore character and storytelling. Through playful activities, they are learning how to bring simple stories to life using their voices, bodies, and imaginations.
- Year 2 learners are continuing to expand their character-building skills. They’ve been experimenting with different character walks and voice choices, helping them step more fully into the roles they play.
- In Year 3, the focus has been on improvisation. Students are being introduced to a range of improvisation games and techniques, learning how to think on their feet, support each other’s ideas, and create scenes spontaneously.
- Year 4 students are delving deeper into character and role development. They’re defining their ability to portray more complex roles and respond to scenarios in character—an exciting step in their drama journey.
- Year 5 classes are focusing on ensemble work and stage awareness. Through group activities and performance rehearsals, they are building their awareness of spacing, timing, and teamwork to strengthen their stage presence.
- Year 6 students are continuing to develop strong ensemble and collaboration skills. They’ve been participating in trust-building and team exercises designed to enhance group cohesion, leadership, and mutual respect—skills that shine through in their performance work.
Across all year levels, students are growing in confidence and creativity. We can’t wait to see how their skills continue to blossom as the term progresses!

Let’s play new instruments in Music!
So far in Term 2, there has been lots of excitement around our focus on translating newly learnt musical skills and knowledge onto classroom instruments. For students in the early years this includes playing chime-bars, claves, and other percussion instruments. Students in Years 3 and 4 will be learning to play simple melodies on the recorder, while those in Years 5 and 6 will be accompanying themselves on the ukulele.
In all classes, we are continuing to use movement to help us learn new music concepts, and for expression and creativity. For younger students, this includes simple dances using everyday items such as paper plates, with many students demonstrating their ability to accurately move in-time. The dance we have been learning is inspired by one created by the Perth-based group Kaboom Percussion. Please follow the link provided for the original if you would like to do it at home!
We use paper plates to clap specific rhythms when listening to The Can Can (Offenbach). Older students have been learning a Chilean line dance (Passeio), to learn more complex concepts, using percussion instruments like castanets to highlight specific rhythms.
Congratulations also to those students who produced excellent responses listening to The Last Post. Some of these were recently displayed during our ANZAC Assembly.
Please get in touch if you have any questions or need to share with me information about your child’s learning needs relevant to Music.

Indonesian News!
Years 1-3 have been learning about Raden Adjeng Kartini, known as Ibu Kartini. She was a prominent Indonesian advocate of women’s right and female education. Indonesian people, especially students, commemorate Ibu Kartini’s fight for girls’ education by wearing traditional clothes to schools or work on her birthday, 21 April.
Our students also learn how to say Happy Mother’s Day in Indonesian.

RADM news: A Visit from Director Christopher R. Watson
We were thrilled to welcome acclaimed director Christopher R. Watson to our campus this week, working alongside the RADM Year 9 and 10 students.
Chris, who is currently working on exciting co-productions between India and Australia, took time out of his busy schedule to speak with our students about the intricacies of filmmaking and the opportunities within the global film industry.
During his visit, Chris shared invaluable insights into the creative process, emphasising the importance of passion and perseverance in personal projects. He encouraged students to explore their unique voices and to never shy away from taking creative risks.
His engaging talk covered a wide range of topics, from the technical aspects of production to the art of storytelling. Students were especially eager to ask questions about Chris’s experience directing F1 driver Kimi Räikkönen in commercial work, and what it’s like to film a feature in Los Angeles.
Chris’s journey from India to our campus was more than just a geographical one—it symbolised a bridge between two vibrant film cultures. His work seeks to blend the rich storytelling traditions of India with the innovative techniques of Australian cinema, creating a truly unique cinematic experience.
He also spent time with our Year 9 RADM students, discussing their upcoming documentary projects, and offered guidance to our Year 10 students as they prepare for their major production of the year: a music video featuring a Triple J Unearthed musical artist.
Students left the session inspired and motivated, armed with practical advice on how to make the most of their own creative projects. Chris’s visit was a powerful reminder of the value of collaboration and the endless possibilities that exist in the world of filmmaking.
We look forward to seeing the incredible films that will emerge from Chris’s international collaborations and hope to welcome him back soon for more enlightening discussions.
Mr Holliday

Year 7 Camp
Last week, our Year 7 students embarked on an unforgettable adventure at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp for the Year 7 Transition Camp! With 49 enthusiastic Year 7s, 6 talented Year 10 Catering students, and 7 dedicated staff members, the camp was a whirlwind of fun and excitement.
The students participated in a variety of fantastic activities, including the exhilarating flying fox, challenging caving, precise archery, creative kite making, energetic ultimate sports, and the heart-pounding big swing. While there were a few tears, the camp was filled with laughter and joy throughout the three days.
A special shoutout to our amazing Year 10 Catering students and Mrs. McVea, who cooked up some phenomenal meals that kept everyone well-fed and happy. The food was absolutely delicious and added to the overall fantastic experience.
The camp was a huge success, and we can't wait for more adventures in the future! Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible and memorable. Here's to more exciting times ahead!
Mr Coetzer and the School Camp team.

Arts Showcase
Year 9/10 Graphics – Expressive Typography
At the end of Term 1, our Year 9 and 10 Graphics students completed a vibrant design project exploring the power of expressive typography. Their task was to create three unique word designs, each representing a different mood, emotion, or texture.
Students used a range of creative tools such as warping and liquifying text, adding texture with overlays, integrating images and shapes, and experimenting with custom fonts. These techniques transformed simple words into bold visual statements full of meaning and style.
The final artworks showcase a diverse range of ideas, from glowing and energetic lettering to eerie and distorted designs, highlighting each student's unique voice and creative thinking.

Year 9/10 Photography – Mastering the Exposure Triangle
At the end of Term 1, our Year 9 and 10 Photography students took on an exciting technical challenge where they had to work in full manual mode to explore the Exposure Triangle: Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO.
Students captured a series of images demonstrating depth of field, motion freeze or blur, and low-light photography, learning how each camera setting influences the final image. From soft, dreamy backgrounds to high-speed action shots and atmospheric low-light scenes, students developed a deeper understanding of how to use camera settings to enhance mood, focus, and impact in their images.
They then presented their work in a digital Photoshop layout. The results not only show their growing technical skills but also their creative eye behind the lens.

Miss Allison
Goodbye Mr Brookes
It was a very emotional last day of Term 1 on Friday 11 April, when we said goodbye to Principal Mark Brookes. In a fitting finale to his nearly ten-year tenure at RCC, our AP’s organised his very own ‘Gauntlet Walk’. This ‘Walk the Gauntlet’ feature has been a wonderful rite of passage for our Year 10’s, that Mr Brookes initiated when he started at the school. Mr Brookes’ walk stretched from Admin to the back of the school, finishing at the Adventure Playground, where he was greeted by a huge loud and noisy crowd of well-wishers! He was presented with a very special Memory Book, which we know he will treasure. Thank you to all our students, teachers and staff who contributed fantastic pictures, drawings and lovely words of farewell. Also thankyou to Mrs Brophy and Mrs Taylor for their hard work collating and creating the book.
